Indian Scouts The Bestseller Classic American Motorcycles

Posted by Larry Raymonds on November 13th, 2009

Indian Motorcycle made motors have been popular since World War II when Indian Motorcycle was manufacturing engines for aircraft and motor for boats, air conditioners and bicycles. The most famous was Indian Scout motorcycle which was introduced in’20 and was in use till’39 when it was used by all, from police to motorcycle racer. Out of all the Scout motorcycle the most admired one was’28 101 Scout with low structure and better handling.

Indian Scout motorcycle went through some changes since its arrival in’20. While it was introduced with an engine size of 37 cubic inch (596 cc) by’27 it was increased to 45 cubic inches (745 cc). This came as a response to the American built motorcycle Excelsior Super X, which had a 45 cubic inch engine.

When 101 Scout was introduced in’28 the Indian Motorcycle admirers felt that it was the ultimate in Indian Motorcycle technology. However Scout started using the body of another Indian’s famous model called Chief in’31 which pleased its admirers to no end.

Between’32 and’41 the Scout fans saw a series of smaller Scout motorcycles which may have been done to satisfy its supporters. These motorcycles had small engines of only 30.50 cubic inch and were called Scout Pony, the Junior Scout, and the Thirty-Fifty.

The early 20th century witnessed the growth of two giants Indian Motorcycle Company and Harley Davidson in USA for motorcycle lovers. The enmitybetween the companies is well-known and has been published in a book called The Harley-Davidson and Indian Wars by Allan Girdler. While Scout ruled the world of motorcycles Harley-Davidson was equally powerful.

To give an illustration of speed Burt Munro, a New Zealander and a motorcycle racer set a record in land speed under-1000cc between’62 and’67 with his 47 year old’20 modified Indian Scout motor cycle. At the time he himself was 68 years old and nobody has been able to defeat this record till today. This shows the speed and toughness of Indian Scout motor cycle. There were other achievements too and everything taken together was made into a movie in 2005 called The World’s Fastest Indian.

In’35, controlling interest in Indian Motorcycles was sold, and production of all Indian Scout motorcycle models stopped in’46. Over the decades, the company changed hands, going bankrupt in’77. Fights over ownership of the brand name played out in court throughout the’80s and 90s.

Finally, in December’98, the claim was established in Federal court in Denver. IMCOA Licensing America, Inc. was awarded the trademark, and the Indian Motorcycle Company of America was shaped as a conglomerate of nine companies. Production began again in’99, and Scout models were manufactured from 2001 to 2003, until the company went bankrupt again.

In 2006, the company re-formed and set up shop in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Though the Chief model is being resurrected, the Indian Scout motorcycle is no longer made.

The feeling that a true lover of the classic Indian scout motorcyclegets from riding is not easy to put into words. If you’re thinking about purchasing one, check out this page on Indian motorcycle dealers.

Collecting Teapot Pottery

Posted by Geri Lauder on October 16th, 2009

Tea has been revered as an exotic and refreshing drink in many different cultures over the centuries. Countries like India, China, England, Japan, Russia and Germany have all created their own customs and ceremonies surrounding the preparation, service and consumption of tea. You may never have considered antique teapots as being historical artifacts, but reconsider. Teapot pottery from all over the world provides clues as to how each society went about their daily lives, negotiated business transactions and entertained in social occasions. Antique teapots were symbols of a person’s status and position.

Teapots and teapot pottery come in an incredible array of styles, sizes, designs and colors. The antique teapots from different countries are incredibly diverse, yet all are similar in that they were designed to brew tea. Vintage teapots and even new teapots all have an appeal to the collector. Collecting teapot pottery offers great visual beauty as well as the practicality of being able to brew a cup of tea. Finding just the piece you have been looking to add to your collection is a great thrill.

The sheer volume of collectible teapot pottery on the market may give you a moment of doubt about starting a collection. Take some time to research what types of teapots and accompanying pottery appeals to you. Narrow your decision to something that you like and is more readily available for you to begin collecting. The intrinsic value of your teapot collection is its value to you, so whether you are collecting antique teapots from 18th Century England or vintage teapots from several decades ago, your collection should reflect your own likes.

Should you decide to collect antique teapots, you need to learn how to assess their value. The condition, shape, desirability and the verification of the pottery mark are all indicators when determining value. This may take some time and investment. Mistakes will be made, but you want to avoid being sold a collectible teapot that turns out to be a copy. Learning to read the potter’s marks that manufacturers put on the bottom of a piece is critical. You don’t need to memorize them, but have a resource book handy that covers the type of teapot pottery you are collecting when identifying the pottery mark.

When assessing the condition of collectible and antique teapots, realize that there will always be signs of wear, but the condition should also show evidence of quality. Any teapot in perfect condition, should be suspect, as it is unlikely to be old.

When you are looking at older teapot pottery you will want to examine its condition closely. If the teapot is of porcelain or ceramic you will see some crackling in the finish. Inspect for cracks or breaks that have been mended. The lid of the teapot should be snug and fit the body. Check the lid and spout for chips and the inside of the pot should be stained from years of brewing pots of tea. If there is a strainer inside the spout, the holes are generally uneven in shape, as the machinery used to manufacture it typically did not make perfectly round holes.

Teapots that are going to see regular use should be well-balanced. The bottom of the pot should sit in a stable position. The spout should not dribble when tea is poured and the handle should be comfortable to grip and be sturdy enough to support the weight of a full pot of tea. While the appearance of a teapot may look simple, a well designed teapot will allow you to pour tea in an elegant and graceful manner.

After all the planning and research, decision making, hunting and finally the purchase of the teapots that will make up your collection, the goal is to enjoy your hobby. Collecting pieces of cultural history, even if they are replicas, is a celebration of the exotic beverage we all know as tea. So after a long day, sit and sip a cup of freshly brewed tea from one of your favorite teapots, and smile as you admire your collection of teapot pottery and remember the fun you had finding that particularly wonderful piece.

In memory of her grandmother, Rachel started hunting for teapots and other teapot pottery when she was in college. Her love of collector’s pottery has expanded to include vintage and classic 20th Century pottery. Rachel offers fabulous deals and affordable pieces of collectible pottery on her website.

A Brief History of The First Generation Mustang

Posted by Wes Fredrickson on July 20th, 2009

The Mustang is a car model that was manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. The first generation Mustangs were from 1964 to 1973. The Ford Motor Company retooled the failing Ford Falcon into the first Mustang. The Ford Falcon had been a big success for Ford at first, but had to be phased out as sales dropped. This is where the Mustang came in.

A day that will live in classic car history, March 9, 1964. The Ford Mustang was born and it grabbed the attention of that generation and many to come after. Since that time, the Mustang aim has become synonymous with American values as apple pie and Lee Greenwood. Introduced to the public at the New York world’s fair on April 17, 1964, it was an instant hit! The only other launch that was anywhere close was the model A.! This car is so popular that it has not had a stop in production since 1964. It is the only original pony car to have this distinction.

The first Mustang generationor was considered in the “pony car” class of cars. Before we call the first mustang the father of all pony cars, we need to define what a pony car is. A pony car is a compact highly stylized car that was very sporty. The concept was inspired by the 1964 Ford Mustang. This car had a long hood and a short deck and a big motor. It was considered very youthful. Pony cars are very masculine and this is very true with the first generations of the Mustang. Due to the fact that Mustangs were very popular, competitors came out the woodwork to emulate the look of the Mustang with their own version of the pony car. Many cars came out of this period of automotive history such as the Camaro, Barracuda, Javelin, Firebird, Cougar, Challenger, and later the foreign-made Toyota Celica.

The year of 1973 pretty much signaled the end of an era in terms of classic muscle cars. This was a time in which fuel shortages started to become a national concern. Consumers were clamoring for fuel-efficient cars that were easy to insure. The car designers at Ford went back to design a more economical car that they hoped would provide the same appeal as previous models. 1973 was the last year that the Ford Mustang was built only original Falcon platform. The 1973 Mustang was the end of the line of the first generation of Mustangs.

Older men like me, looking back on their first car of the teen years with great sentimentality. It is really the memories that are attached to a car like the Ford Mustang, that really make it burn into your soul for the rest of your days. The carefree days, the girls, and the freedom of being on the open road will never be forgotten. Unfortunately I sold the 73 Mustang that I owned, but the spirit of the last first generation Ford Mustang will always be with me. What can I say? It will always be in my heart.

The Wall Street Mint Silver Bar - A Beautiful Way To Commemorate 9/11

Posted by Christina Goldman on May 30th, 2009

The Wall Street Mint Silver Bar is a beautiful .999 fine silver bar that features the skyline of New York City, with the twin World Trade Center Towers, as it appeared before 9/11. Produced by the Wall Street Mint beginning in 2002 to commemorate the events of 9/11, these highly collectible silver bars are no longer being produced and are hard to find. These proof-like silver bars are available (if you can find them!) in two sizes - 10 ounce and 100 ounce.

Let’s look at the advantages to owning both sizes:

100-oz silver bars

1. Convenient way to invest a large amount of wealth in silver bullion form

2. Uniform shape makes it simple to stack and store them in a safe deposit box

3. 6.86 pound weight makes them easy to handle

4. Highly liquid as this particular size is an accepted trading unit

Coincidentally - 100 ounce silver bars came about in the 1970’s when inflation was soaring. Silver, a well-known inflation hedge, was highly sought after by investors as it was illegal to own gold bullion before December 31, 1974.

Small refiners started producing .999 fine silver products in order to meet the surging demand. Demand was so great by the mid-1970’s that large refiners like Engelhard and Johnson-Matthey began to produce the 100-oz silver bars.

10-oz silver bars

1. The favorite size of most investors

2. Smaller unit of value makes them easier to trade for other services and goods

3. Flat, uniform shape makes for easy, neat storage

4. You don’t need alot of money to invest

Because the Wall Street Mint Silver Bars are only available on the secondary market, they offer an investment opportunity with a great chance for future appreciation. Whether you invest in the 100 oz size or the 10 oz variety depends on your financial status and investment objectives.

A Quick Guide To Collecting Diecast Models

Posted by Richard Kerrey on May 18th, 2009

No matter what your age is, collecting diecast models is a great hobby. If you are an automobile fan, diecast cars allow you to own and enjoy your favorite models. They’re the next best thing to owning the real one.

Diecast car is pretty much any miniature automobile replica that is made of diecast metal called zamak, a special aluminium and zinc alloy. They are generally made with great attention to details that replicate a real model.

The early diecast models, up to about 20 years ago, were made mostly as toys with quite basic design and much less details that we see today. They usually only featured a painted body.

Automotive replicas have been the most popular die-casts from the beginning. But there are many other interesting categories like aircrafts, ships, trucks, military vehicles, construction equipment, and so on. Most collectors usually focus only on one or two of their favorite categories.

Diecasts come in an incredible variety of styles and sizes. One of the most important term to understand is scale assigned to each model. Typical scales are 1:18, 1:24, 1:32, 1:43, 1:48 and 1:64. 1/18 scale (9-12″ in length) is the largest and offers the best details, but is also the most expensive.

Prices of diecasts are determined by size, rareness (limited editions) and the level of detail. The larger the scale, the higher the level of detail, the rarer the model, the bigger the price. Working features like opening doors, hood, bonnet, and a workable steering all lead to a higher price.

Collecting model cars can be quite an expensive hobby. Nevertheless, it is growing in popularity. People both young and old love cars and if they can’t own it for real, they can enjoy die cast replicas. But be warned, it can be addictive!

The Famous Spartan Sword

Posted by Todd Alan on February 28th, 2009

The one name, Sparta, has started off many conversations on the Greeks and the Spartan sword that was a part of ancient Greek history. Athens and Sparta, the two rivals, which fought for supremacy among the ancient city states consisted of brave fighters who were trained in classical warfare from the beginning.

Having been trained in skilled combat, the great Spartan sword was the most deadly weapon for a soldier in a phalanx. A high degree of discipline and knowledge was required for the fighters to maintain their formations in combat.

A quick and deadly battle during the many wars like the Polynesian War, the Greco Persian Wars, the Battle of the Marathons, eulogized by many a poet and historian, frequently speak of the Spartan sword and the shield as the main weapons for the warriors.

A statue of King Lyonidas I in Sparta is a perfect example of a warrior king, something that every Spartan learned how to do since birth, fight for their honor and respect for the land. The land was above everything else and one would either come back a winner from a battle or die for ones own land. King Lyonidas Spartan sword held ready for action in combat stands truth to the Spartans significance on fighting for their rights and their state. The state was above everything else.

Life has moved on from the fifth century BC. Modern methods of warfare have evolved and people have evolved technologically. At the press of a button man is able to destroy, annihilate a whole nation, without so much as moving an extra muscle. The age of innovation has pushed us on to new frontiers the Greeks would never have imagined. But they were the original creators of democracy, they sowed the seeds of a civilized democratic society, taught the world organized, disciplined methods of warfare. The Spartan sword remains today a symbol of a nation which raises its artistic weapon high over its head, ready for action, ready for anything to die with honor for ones country and ones fellow men.

Spanish Gold Coins: The Eternal Lure Of Pirate Gold

Posted by Christina Goldman on February 8th, 2009

One simply cannot speak of Spanish gold coins without imagining pirates, hurricanes, and shipwrecks in the Caribbean. In fact, the preeminence of Florida and the Caribbean as being the location of more hidden treasure than anyplace else in the world has been propagated and recognized since the 1500s.

Gold collectors and investors are well aware that over $160 million in gold and silver lies buried in the tropical waters off Florida and the Caribbean. Because of its rich history of pirates, wars, hurricanes, and the presence of Spanish galleons carrying gold (also known as Spanish Escudo) and silver from the New World to the Old World, treasure hunters seeking doubloons and pieces of eight have made Florida and Caribbean waters their home away from home for decades.

Spanish gold coins are exquisite in their design and detail and some are available to collectors and investors in a wide range of denominations, sizes, and gold content. Spanish gold coins minted in 1877 and emblazoned with the right facing bust of King Alfonso XIII are a favorite.

The more popular denominations of gold pieces available to collectors today were struck between the years 1889 and 1890, though gold coins minted between 1588 and 1874 are much sought after. Ranging in gold content between 0.8671 and 0.0951, many of the more common denominations of Pesetas are available at reasonable prices for many collectors.

A feather in the cap of any collector, pre-1850 Spanish coins, and most especially those minted before 1800, are sought after like no other coins in the history of mankind. The coast of Florida as well as the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean have brought gold coins buried for hundreds of years to the light of day, to be enjoyed, admired, and coveted, by most coin collectors around the world.
